SWIM TEAM RAISES MONEY FOR NEW POOL
The Covington Critters Swim Team swam more than 64 miles and raised $10,318 to help pay for the new Los Altos Community Pool.
Tuesday night, the team presented its check to Mayor Curtis Cole and the pool's executive board.
The team swam 64.2 miles, or 4,450 laps, at the Mountain View High School pool on July 25 during the fundraiser. The swimmers generated donations through per-lap pledges and cash gifts.
"I'm so proud of the team for stepping up and going over the goal amount we set to earn that afternoon," coach Ali Desmond said. "Everyone did such a great job."
The team swam at the Covington School pool until 2001, when the school was transformed to an elementary school and the pool closed.
The new pool in Rosita Park, adjacent to Covington School, is slated to open in late 2008. The new facility is being funded by the Los Altos Community Pool Foundation, a nonprofit organization that is raising $3.5 million for the project.
