Los Altos Community Pool

Community Liasons

LaNae Avra, Schools Liason

LaNae is an engineer with Cadence Design Systems. The Avra family has lived in Los Altos since 1992, where the children attend Montclaire Elementary School and swim with both Covington and Sunnyvale Swim Teams. A firm believer in the benefits of pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly communities, LaNae founded the Montclaire Safe Routes to School program to encourage children to walk and ride bike to school. She is a member of the Los Altos Traffic Commission, and is active in the Los Altos Union Presbyterian Church.

“I consider learning to swim an essential part of my children's education, particularly in a community like Los Altos where an abundance of backyard pools and easy access to the ocean can be dangerous for non-swimmers. Los Altos Community Pool Foundation is committed to building swimming facilities that will unite the community, providing education, fitness, and fun for all Los Altans.”

Joanne Byrne

Joanne Byrne, Campaign Coordinator

Joanne Byrne is Campaign Coordinator for the Los Altos Community Pool Foundation. A life-long Los Altos resident, Joanne spent 23 years with the Los Altos Recreation Department, where, as Recreation Supervisor, she was involved in marketing and development of recreation programs and services. Joanne also participated in the planning and development of many Los Altos parks, most notably Grant, Rosita and Conner Parks. In her post-Los Altos government career, Joanne is committed to serving the community through assisting non-profit organizations.

“I strongly believe a community needs a balanced recreation program - one that delivers a variety of experiences to the range of citizens it serves. My experience developing and delivering recreation and leisure services to Los Altos has made me aware of the acute need for aquatic programs, and more importantly, the facilities which make them possible. Swimming pools embody so many facets that define our notion of “recreation,” for they foster learning, inspire healthy competition, promote wellness and provide an environment for unstructured play. I am proud to be part of Los Altos Community Pool Foundations’s efforts to provide these experiences to Los Altos and its future generations.”

Scott Shea

Scott Shea, Youth Swim Team

Scott Shea is the long time coach of Los Altos Masters and Covington Swim Team, now associated with Stanford Covington Racing Aquatics operating at Fremont Hills Country Club. Scott swam at UC Davis, and competes, with his father, in triathlons. Scott has coached countless Los Altos children during his 7 year tenure at Covington Pool and is more than a coach to many Los Altos swimming families.

“I’m privileged to work with young Los Altos swimmers. It’s tremendously fulfilling to me as a coach to help with their swimming and witness their excitement as they improve. It’s even more rewarding to play a role in their personal growth, just to watch them evolve into young adults. Swimming teaches so much — goal setting, discipline and sacrifice, time management, teamwork, and don’t forget fun! It’s critical to have a community pool in Los Altos so this program can prosper and more children have the opportunity to participate.”
